Dr Schep has been employed by the University of Otago from 1987 until 2019 (School of Pharmacy from 1987 to 1999 and the National Poisons Centre from 2000 to 2019). His expertise consists of providing poisons information concerning all aspects of human acute and chronic poisoning. Additionally, he lectures on Forensic Toxicology at the University of Otago. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, 6 book chapters and a wide range of conference proceedings and other medical publications.
He has provided advice, and presented seminars, to the New Zealand Police, New Zealand Defence Force as well as Emergency Departments and other health care providers. He has also provided teaching seminars throughout the country, to various community organisations, Maraes and secondary schools.
He established his consultancy firm, ToxInform Ltd, in 2008 where he provides advise to a wide range of clients concerning human risks and exposures to various toxic chemicals, pharmaceuticals and recreational drugs. This has included toxicology reports and expert opinions in various court cases, both in Australia and New Zealand. He has worked with the High Court, Court of Appeal, and various district, employment and family courts.
